The area around Maiden Castle has a lot of arable farming and the fields leading up to the ridge above Upwey are full of rape seed in the early spring. It can be quite a short burst of full colour so I wanted to make sure that I headed out to make some sketches and reference notes. I never copy directly but try and soak up the atmosphere of a day and the feeling it provokes. I will allow the "artistic licence" to abstract and try not to get bogged down in the painting but allow the original energy to remain. Not always as easy as it sounds.
